Starting in Experimentation

A photo essay based in experimental film development to kick off a blog about all things analog photography!

To start a blog about analog photography it seems fitting to use a photo essay based in experimentation. How, when I first found out you can use almost any liquid, adjusted to the right temperature and acidity, as a developer, my mind jumped to my own body. The fluids that I naturally make developing images of myself, a self referential loop, a process that exposes the infinity held within identity.

What resulted was six months of often more-difficult-than-expected collecting and developing of small clips of self portraits taken on a single B&W 35mm roll of film. As is unavoidable, life happens along the way, and that background drama felt an interesting companion to the already intimate film development note taking process. The two together form a medical log of sorts, a photo essay made via self development and processing. This project was completed in 2023.
